This unit consists of two PowerPoint presentations and a quiz. The first PPT is a pre-assessment for the teacher to use in determining which words the students already know. The second PPT is a teaching tool for use in teaching vocabulary words such as map, globe, cardinal and intermediate directions, map key, scale, symbol, etc.
The vocabulary quiz is a format I use with my ELL students (and non-ELL students, too.) Students write what the word means and then draw something to represent the word. I also have students come up with motions to stand for each word, so that they will better remember the meaning. Always show the slides in slideshow mode, because sometimes my slides look funny in edit mode.
I used this unit to teach 3rd grade Social Studies, but I could see this used with kids from 1st grade through 4th or 5th grade, if the kids need to learn the proper map terminology.
