Marathon is on the Grade 7 history curriculum and can be used as such with the Research questions.
This small book is also designed to be easy for Grade 7 students who hate Reading and History to get hooked on books. I chose an event that has a modern connection to their sports lives and to 20th century heroes. There are easy comprehension exercises-just filling in the blanks. You can use it as a High Interest/ Low Vocabulary text with older students or enrichment for younger children. You may find that you need to read page 12 (Conclusion) to those who have the most difficulty.
Then there are grammar lesson looking at the the most common sentence patterns. I devised this colour-code and method thirty years ago and have found it to be effective with students from Adult Basic Education classes to Grade 2. Working with one pattern at a time, I start them off with "colouring sentences" to my verbal instructions and within a week they can pick up the right colour of high-lighter on their own. Even if they don't remember the technical terms, they see the patterns and relationships.
