I use this exercise as a prequel to a barbie bungee activity I do. Totally Tubular is a much more teacher directed activity so I can ensure the students have a good understanding of scatterplots and the line of best fit and how to use them to obtain conclusions. This can also be used for younger grades to practice collecting data and graphing it.
In the barbie bungee activity I have students create their own experiment to collect data and then we test it by bungee jumping barbies from a tall height (with our safety taken into consideration, but not necessarily the barbie's). Barbie Bungee is a more inquiry based math activity.
So Totally Tubular is set up as more of a teacher guided/diagnostic activity used to model the concepts of graphs, scatterplots and line of best fit, therefore I have not included a rubric.
I record who understands the concepts and who is still struggling.
I conduct small group conferences and mini lessons based on the needs of the class
If you are interested in doing the more student directed barbie bungee please look for that activity coming soon to my page.
If you wanted to you could make this more of an individual project so you can use it for summative assessment purposes.
Make sure the presenter notes are visible so you can see my notes for each slide.
