This book is a graphic novel for high school students. The novel is short and can be read independently. Congressman John Lewis (Ga) shares his remarkable story with collaboration with co-writer Andrew Aydin and artist Nate Powell. Book One spans Congress Lewis’ youth in rural Alabama, his life-changing meeting with Martin Luther King, Jr., the birth of the Nashville Student Movement, and the “lunch counter” sit-ins.
The Novel Study contains a list of 56 questions (pages 1-2) including a separate answer page (pages 1-2). (The answers also have page numbers) These can be used to create a novel test or quizzes. These questions are in order of the novel and are only literal questions.
There is also an introduction PowerPoint presentation with information about John Lewis, the civil rights movement, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, and the Nashville Student Movement. There are also several videos with the presentation.
The novel would lend itself to some interesting class discussions about the civil rights movement, Martin Luther King, Jr, and educational integration movement.
