March is READING MONTH and this USA map of reading activities is a fun way to get kids reading! It's also a great way for kids to practice their USA geography!
(Of course, the month can be changed and the activities can be assigned during ANY month of the year! It can even be a summer project.)
Certainly, I use it primarily as a beginning-of-March homework assignment. Of course, class time can be used to work on activities, too. Since checking the work of 50 states for all students is overwhelming, the all-important parent/guardian signature verifies the completion of most states. Some states, however, do need teacher approval.
There are a wide variety of activities to choose from. Activities on the map include...
>reciting poetry on the phone to a relative
>writing a letter to an author
>reading a recipe
...and much much more!
If a student completes all 50 activities,10 books will be read in a month--not an easy task! Though this reading activity aims to be fun, the map is designed so a student must read at least 5 books in order to earn a top grade of 90% or higher.
With exactly 50 states, grading is relatively simple. The reading map can be a 50-point assignment, a 100-point assignment, or some other amount.
Sometimes in the elementary grades, my students have earned rewards instead of a grade. For instance, completing all 50 states would earn a free book order book and a special certificate, 40 states would earn a yummy treat, 30 states would earn a bookmark, 20 states would earn a special pencil, and 10 states would earn a fun eraser. Students receive the reward at their completed level ALONG WITH all the prizes below that level.
Your students are sure to have some fun with reading no matter how you set up the parameters for your MARCH IS READING MONTH COAST TO COAST READING ACTIVITIES.
