Basketball playoff season is here! The NCAA men's basketball tournament is ideal for challenging your students' abilities while learning about basketball. Included in this product is a short history of basketball with reading comprehension questions. Students will explore geography by finding the locations of the tournament sites, as well as distances from specific cities. Next, your class will proofread a passage about how the tournament goes from a full field of teams to a national champion. Math concepts are reinforced through word problems involving: elapsed time; operations with fractions; decimals; percents; multiplying and dividing decimals; subtracting larger numbers; rounding; determining data points. Students also are asked to think critically in response to several questions. Even creative students will enjoy designing a new basketball. Energize your classroom and make math relevant with "March Madness" from Teaching Near the River.
