Read or review books during March Madness or end of the year with a fun book tournament. This is an easy set up for your classroom.
Print off flag bunting and brackets and place on a wall (or window, in my case!)
Print off a bracket for each student. There is a cover included if you want to use a folder for each student. I use a folded piece of construction paper and the students have a remembrance to take home after the tournament.
I've included a notebook/scorecard to print off for students to use before voting. I like giving students time to think about what they liked about each book before they vote. Students write in the title, author, and a short book summary. Then there is a checklist for students to think about what they liked about each book. After individual tallying in their scorecard, students fill in a quick ballot and place it in a box to vote.
After you tally the votes, keep track of winners on the bracket. This is patterned after March Madness so there are labels for Sweet 16, Elite 8, Final 4, The Game, and Champion. I printed off the book covers for the books that we chose to use in our tournament. Some of the books we chose were books that we have enjoyed throughout the year and other books were new to my students before we began the tournament.
If you're looking for another way to celebrate books, check out my store for my Academy Awards type book award show. I made a video of my students giving awards to books and book characters. Find it here:
