March Madness Math Basketball Tournament Primary Project 2016 {Common Core Aligned}

I hope you enjoy using this March Madness math activity to engage students during the basketball tournament! Students predict the National Champion through the process of elimination when they predict the winning teams for each game in each round of the tournament.

The object of the game is simple: Correctly pick the winner of the most matches in the 63 games following the "First Four" round of the NCAA basketball tournament.

Students are challenged to track their own points per round by calculating the total number of wins and writing equations to express the total points as a sum of equal addends. This project also includes extensions such as creating and solving real world problems based on the data collected.

Students love solving addition and subtraction problems as well as creating their own equations and word problems based on the results and progress of the NCAA basketball tournament !

Working with equal groups of objects helps students to gain foundations for multiplication 2OA.C. This project also supports students conceptual understanding of multiplication as they interpret products of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 4 × 6 as the total number of objects in 4 groups of 20 points each 3OA.A.
