I created this lesson in preparation for March Madness even though not every student is a basketball fan. In any case, this lesson:
(a) blends the excitement of March Madness and the Sweet Sixteen with Spanish content,
(b) teaches reading comprehension and provides practice in a fun way, and
(c) provides a seasonal brain break that can be used between thematic units.
Specifically, this download provides two, paragraph-length reading assignments that describe March Madness in general terms.
The first selection lists four valuable strategies and guides students through the process of reading in Spanish for comprehension.
Each paragraph also has 4-5 discussion / comprehension questions for students and answer keys.
These materials are flexible enough that you can have students complete them individually, in pairs, or you can use them in a whole group settting.
There are also word searches for the 2017 and 2018 tournaments. These can be used as brain breaks, as reward activities, or as differentiation tools for those who finish the reading assignments early.
The word searches can actually be used to support sight word recognition for ESL students.
*The 2018 word search has a secret message challenge for the students. (One English language message and one in Spanish).
