Many state tests now use passages that are paired with one another. One passage is fiction and the other is non-fiction and students are expected to know the difference. It is imperative, then, that students be given practice with this! I have developed high-interest passages—four in each genre for the month of March. Each passage has its own comprehension questions, an activity, and finally a linked activity with its counterpart. For example, there are two passages written about St. Patrick's Day. One is fiction and the other non-fiction. Each has its own set of comprehension questions and its own activity. Finally, the two passages are linked together in some way so that the student can use higher-level thinking to demonstrate their understanding.
