My kids were not motivated to do their nightly reading homework, so I created a reading challenge for them. Since starting it, they have all jumped on board and are loving it.... I have 95-100% participation. Within a week of receiving their first READO challenge, they were all asking if we could do it again next month.
Most challenges involves something related to reading (genres of books, predicting, summarizing etc...) or they relate to oral language and sharing ideas and information. A few challenges are also intended to get families to spend a bit of time together... these seem to be some of the favorites with many of my students =)
I hand out small prizes at the end of the month for kids who complete, 2 lines, 3 lines, 4 lines or a full READO blackout. This is not necessary though - you can do whatever works best for you and your students.
This challenge was written for my grade 4 students, but could also be done (or easily modified) for grades 3-6.
