This five page handout targets identifying fractional parts as well as recognizing fractions in lowest terms using words. In each riddle set, specific words are given. The students are instructed to figure out the correct fractional part of each particular word. (Example: The first ½ of WEST would be WE. Notice that WE is also 2/4 of WEST.) If each fractional part is correctly identified, when the students write the letters on the lines provided, a new word is created. Each set of new words becomes a message about the month of March. In the original handout, there are seven sets of March messages followed by question(s) for the students to answer. This means there are seven ways to practice identifying.
Instead of completing all of them in one day, the puzzles may be divided up and used as a focus activity. Simply give the students one puzzle each day or intersperse them throughout the month of March. Answers are included at the end of the handout. For a sample set, download the preview version of this handout.
