In this lesson students will compare and contrast two explorers, Marco Polo and Ibn Battuta. There is a brief model in which the teacher will model how to properly annotate and use the techniques of close reading. Afterwards, students will compare and contrast Ibn and Marco, both who they were as people (Christian; Muslim) and as exploreres and travelers (China; Mecca). Afterwards, stduents will complete a two paragrah writing piece using their findings and graphic organizers. Also included are student work that can be completed for 2 videos. One is about Hajj, a Muslim's pilgrimage to Mecca and the other is on Ibn Battuta himself. All links, activities and orksheets/organizers are included in the lesson.
