This video activity is to be used before and after showing students the PBS documentary Mariachi High. This culture activity includes a research section for students to research the history of mariachi music, the instrumentation involved, the competition side to mariachi, using the authentic website for Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza - the same competition program featured in the Mariachi High video.
Once students have finished the video, they will complete a Venn diagram and discussion activity to draw parallels and differences between their own school band programs and Zapata High School's mariachi band program.
Included are teacher notes, two pages of research questions to be answered from the Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza website, an answer key for research questions, and one post-viewing video activity with a Venn diagram and discussion instructions. Depending on the length of your classes, this two-part activity (combined with the time it takes to watch the video) should take 2-3 days.
This music activity would be great for 7th-12th graders.
