This guide is designed for teachers who are interested and ready to begin incorporating video games into their curriculum. This document is a standard-based lesson plan for a 9th grade physical science course. In this lesson plan, student will be able to identify the difference between speed, velocity and acceleration, an important understanding that is required comprehend for success with the associated content. Mario Kart demonstrates the three basic concepts of motion: speed, velocity and acceleration while students enjoy racing around the track. Identifying the differences between these concepts frequently confuses students and by playing the game they can become more familiar with the major differentiations between these concepts. The lesson uses Mario Kart Wii to teach and strengthen science vocabulary by developing an accurate meaning of three commonly misperceived terms, provide some basic insight into laws of motion and develop the ability to successfully participate in a follow up hands-on lab. This document contains an overview of video games used in the classroom, hands-on activity worksheet, resources and instruction to implement this lesson.
