Mark Rothko was a famous artist who created paintings with simple compositions. Some of his paintings are of basic shapes, such as squares and rectangles. Rothko is a good artist for elementary students to learn about because they can make artwork with only a few basic shapes.
This is a one day only art lesson plan that doesn’t require any prep other than getting the supplies ready and reading through the lecture notes. Sharing this presentation with young students introduces students to art history, and this lesson is simple enough that it can be left with a substitute teacher.
This zip file includes a PowerPoint featuring Mark Rothko’s Color Field Paintings with slide notes, and the art-making lesson plan.
