This is a reading guide to accompany Mark Twain's Chapters 8 & 9 from Life on the Mississippi. It includes identifying extended metaphors, looking for and analyzing descriptions and images of Twain's river, and a creative writing activity to evaluate the experiences of Twain on the river. This could be adapted as a class activities, may be used as an individual reading guide, or could be used as a homework assignment. The reading is included through an online link. Assignment could be completed in 1-2 days for a focused class group, or may be extended as a longer activity.
