Students take for granted the wonderful use of figurative language that goes into naming a product. The world of devising names for our everyday consumer goods is a lucrative one but also very interesting. The words sued to label a product conjures up a lot of images for a consumer, and product designers are very savvy as to how denotation and connotation work to create specific tones. In this activity, students will explore the world of product names, and close read them, citing denotation, connotation, and tone. They will also look at why companies may have named these products and how they associate with what the product does. lastly, they will design their own packaging, thinking about name and package designs. They can work singly or in pairs.
