This thematic unit is based on Martin Luther King, Jr. The unit plan has multiple different activities designed to help students practice close reading of a text, find and support central ideas within a text, learn how and then use accountable talk strategies, vocabulary building work, analysis of a text, comparing/ contrasting a text, and MORE. It also leads students through an analysis of King's famous "I Have a Dream" speech. All of the activities can work together as a complete unit, or can be taken apart and used individually.
The lesson includes a teacher notes/guide section for all of the activities, a procedure for the lessons each day, over 15 different worksheets for students including a modified/ differentiated version for ELL students, a literary term sheet, writing prompts, questions for discussion, accountable talk moves, and a culminating assessment.
This is a wonderful lesson plan that highlights the rich figurative language that King was so famous for, along with thought provoking questions and writing prompts for students to reflect and discuss. Perfect for this time of year!
