Martin Luther King Jr.- Teaching Main Idea and Text Features with an Article

This pack was created for 2nd- 3rd graders struggling with finding the main idea in nonfiction texts. It contains one informational article about Martin Luther King Jr. There are four different levels of the texts. The levels of the running text are about a mid-second grade, end second grade, beginning third grade, and mid third grade reading level. Please note, none of the text features are included in leveling. All of the text features are identical in all the articles. This pack is perfect for guided reading or as independent work.

After students read the article and answer the questions and/or fill out the graphic organizer, students can cut the article apart and glue the text features into a text features hunt book. A smaller, one page, version of each level of the article is included, in black and white, for students to cut apart.

Students can also answer questions about the article. Students will have to use the text features to answers the questions. This would be perfect as a center or small group activity. Two different sets of questions are included. One set of questions is more difficult.

This pack only has black and white pages, as most of the photographs from the time period were only available in black and white.

• 3 vocabulary cards, with photographs
• One page informational article in black and white with four levels (mid second grade, end second grade, beginning third grade, and mid third grade reading level)
• Comprehension questions (two formats available: multiple choice and open answer)
• Main idea graphic organizer (using headings)
• Main idea graphic organizer for entire article
• Text Feature Book with cut and paste definitions for all features in this article
• Two sets of questions, a higher and lower level, using the text features with recording sheet.
• Two Graphic Organizers to describe the relationship between a series of historical events
• Two Interactive Notebook Flip Flap Books to describe the relationship between a series of historical events
