This resource is a great way to introduce Martin Luther King Day to young students. This resource has two components to it; a book and a writing/drawing activity.
Book: This book has one fact per page with colorable clipart. Have your students color each page after reading the book. The book itself is more difficult than most KG and grade 1’s can handle, however opportunities for shared reading, kindergarteners can read this book successfully and learn about Martin Luther King, Jr.
The book includes the following: “Title Page. Martin Luther King, Jr. was born on January 15th. He was born in Atlanta, Georgia. He wanted to be a preacher, like his dad. He gave a famous speech. In his speech, he told about his dream. He wanted everyone to treat each other fairly. He won the Nobel Peace Prize. We celebrate Martin Luther King Day in January.”
The book comes in two styles, as a full page printable as well as a half page printable. So one page creates two books.
Writing/Drawing Activity: This activity focuses on Martin Luther King's dream. Students draw and write about their dream in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. There are four versions of this handout. With and without handwriting lines as well as with and without a Martin Luther King, Jr. colorable head. Just choose the version that suits your students best.
