For Martin Luther King Jr. Day in January, I usually read a short biography book on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. After reading, I have my students write a paragraph about their dreams for making a difference in the world. I use this graphic organizer to help them plan out their writing. In the main idea box, I have students write a sentence about their dream for making a difference (ex. My dream for making a difference is for poverty to end in this world). I then I have students write details about how they plan to make their dream come true (ex. I will make speeches asking people to provide food and shelter for the homeless people in their community). Once students have planned out their writing using this graphic organizer, they then put everything together in a more detailed paragraph.
