Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Legacy Craftivity: Template and Directions (three pages)

I am so excited about this unit because with so many things to teach and time always such an issue in the classroom, it's a great way to combine social studies lessons as well as reading and writing skills. Plus, I think the material is important and will be interesting for your kids. When kids are motivated, learning is so much easier!

I really like the worksheets included. They explain so many things about his life, his character, and the times that he lived in. I loved researching about Martin Luther King, Jr. and while I knew his story, of course, I learned even more information that inspired me. He is such an important American that all children should know well.

The "I Can Make a Difference" and "I Have a Dream" writing pages are great to choose from, Use one of these in January for a paragraph writing activity, whether it is one paragraph or five paragraphs. These topics ask your kids to either think about their lives or to think about the lives of others and help them look to the future and see that their actions can have lasting effects. Great lesson right there!

Poetry is always a great way to incorporate writing throughout the year. The acrostic poem included spells out the word DREAM and the directions and example pages will help your students complete it successfully. The Most Important Thing Poem (adopted from Margaret Wise Brown) is perfect at the end of the unit, when kids know a lot of information about Martin Luther King. This poem is easy and fun!

If you do Interactive Notebooks, the foldables might be interesting to you. One is about the different parts of Martin Luther King's life and the other is about important vocabulary/concepts related to his life. Definitely a great discussion lesson in that one!

I really love the craftivity! I wanted something that was a little unique and came up with the idea for different symbols that stand for the legacy that he left. I think these will turn out really well and will look great as a visual display of some of the learning that has taken place.

And the task cards....so many ways to use them and a great reinforcement of all of the challenging vocabulary and concepts related to Martin Luther King, Jr. and his life story.

I hope you really like this literacy set and that it is something that will work well in your classroom, as it has in mine.
