This PPT provides a brief 4-day mini-unit on MLK Jr. It sets up the background for celebrating MLK Jr. Day by introducing students to "unjust laws." Students will learn the importance of having fair laws, and understand at a rudimentary level the importance of the Civil Rights Movement. There is a brief bio of MLK Jr. in the form of a graphic organizer as well. It can be integrated with as it includes writing prompts.
This PowerPoint is intended to teach young students about the importance of Martin Luther King, Jr. and his national holiday.
Students will understand that long ago our country had laws that did not treat all people fairly.
Students will distinguish between what is fair and unjust.
Students will write a response to what they learned about “unjust laws.”
Students will analyze an unjust hypothetical situation and use this to make connections to MLK, Jr.
Students will understand the “peaceful” methods by which MLK, Jr. “fought” for justice (i.e. peaceful protest, marches, speeches).
Students will participate in an activity in which the class has unjust laws for a day (or week) and create posters to “peacefully protest” the unjust laws in the class.
Students will be introduced to a short bio of MLK, Jr., including importance vocabulary (equality & civil rights).
