For Martin Luther King, Jr. day, Black History Month, or a unit on Civil Rights, students organize 14 events on a timeline and answer 4 questions on MLK Jr.'s life. They then classify each item according to a system detailed in the instructions, they complete one task for 5 items of their choice, and another task for 2 other items. There are arrows in the first two lines of the timeline showing students the direction to fill out the pieces in. Additional timeline pieces are provided for students to add their own information if time allows. This could work for a sub! Answers are provided where appropriate.
Sample timeline items and questions include:
-- his house is bombed
-- becomes a minister
--receives Nobel Peace Prize
--marches from Selma to Montgomery
--What do you consider MLK Jr.'s greatest success and why? Would historians agree with you, why or why not?
--If you could give one piece of advice to Martin Luther at any point during his life, what would it be and why? Do you think he would have heeded your advice, why or why not?
***a teacher's note is included in the file describing an alternate way students can complete this activity***
