Students read excerpts from two speeches. "The Ballot or the Bullet" and "I Have a Dream." While reading the speeches, students work on context clues, tone, and writing a comparative essay. I like to have students listen to Malcolm X's speech. The excerpt of Malcom X is a summary, so that students will be encouraged to listen to the speech. I then have students listen to Martin Luther King's speech. The excerpt from MLK is word for word. Then students compare the two. This was designed to be like the SAGE/Common Core tests.
