This print-and-use lesson worksheet uses Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech (arguably the greatest and most important speech of all time) to introduce students to the defining characteristics and rhetorical devices of great speeches, as well as oratory skills. The worksheet includes:
1) Introduction to great speeches with a definition of the three fundamental principles of rhetoric pathos, ethos, and logos.
2) Close-reading and analysis activity based on an extract from Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have A Dream" speech, to facilitate application of introduced terminology, figurative language, and additional rhetorical devices.
3) Give a Great Speech Follow-Up activity with detailed assessment criteria and rubric - students give a speech about an important current issue.
