I used this response sheet with my fifth graders when we did a study on Martin Luther King. I wanted them to see the actual video of the speech (on YouTube) and to get them to actually focus on the speech and try to understand his words, I gave them parts of his speech and wanted them to fill in the missing parts. I also wanted them to think about what they were seeing and the message he was trying to convey so I added some additional response questions to allow them a chance to write their own thoughts. After the video and the individual responses we held a class discussion based on these questions. The discussion was more powerful because they focused their attention on the speech and then wrote honest thoughts and feelings that they had about the civil rights movement led by Martin Luther King.
