Marxists and Moguls, or the M & M game, uses candy and paper airplanes to teach students economics.
I use this simulation in conjunction with George Orwell’s Animal Farm so students have an emotional experience through which to process some advantages and disadvantages of capitalism and socialism.
In Old Major’s view, Farmer Jones is the classic capitalist who reaps the rewards of others’ labors and keeps most of the benefits and profits for himself. Because this strikes him as unfair, Old Major proposes a socialist model in which the animals will collaborate and have no leader or master. They will all participate in production and share equally in profits.
This game is designed to help students experience capitalism under Jones and Old Major’s proposed socialism. You can re-arrange the parts of this activity to suit your purposes. I usually don’t label the economic models until after students have experienced them since the terms may cause them to favor one over the other.
