Thoughtful, close reading questions and space for answering questions provided beside and all around the poetry of Mary Oliver. 8 poems including: "Blackwater Pond," "The Journey," "Fall Song" and "The Storm." Questions for individual poems such as: Analyze the succession of imagery here. Why does she layer it in this order? How does Mary Oliver use enjambent and end-stopped lines to enhance the scene she describes here? Describe the poet's voice; write your own final verse to this poem; How is the end of fall an appropriate setting for her subject matter? One of the main areas I'm reaching in this Mary Oliver unit is voice. Students will discover and articulate how Oliver's voice is crafted into these poems.
