This mask project includes a complete art lesson plan for a unit on masks and handouts for teaching students how to create a paper mache mask in the art classroom. The mask outline provided can be used as a form for the mask. The mask outline provides students with the chance to cut out and assemble a 3-D mask from paper. You may alter the project to just coloring or painting the mask instead of using paper mache.
-Masks powerpoint (with examples of different masks from around the world)
-Lesson Plan for six days
-Mask Design Handout (for students to brainstorm ideas for creating their mask)
-Mask Outline (for students to cut out and assemble their own mask form) Hint: Print this mask outline on thicker cardstock paper for better results if using paper mache. If you do not have cardstock paper, you may want to glue the finished design to a thicker paper to add stability to the mask form.
-Mask Artist Statement (for students to write about, reflect on, and draw their finished mask)
All files are in .pdf and .docx formats if you would like to make your own changes.
The six-day lesson plan has the basic outline for instructing students on how to create a paper mache mask inspired by another culture. You may find that this project takes less time or more time depending on your class’s needs. You may find that you would like to do only animal masks or only half masks in the style of Mardis Gras. You may alter this lesson plan and all materials included in this Teachers Pay Teachers product listing to your needs as an art teacher. The paper mache mask project is messy, BUT FUN!
