I always assign this project to my students after reading Poe's "Masque of the Red Death." It's perfect! They have fun with it, get to show their creative side, and it can be done in about two full class days. I especially like doing this project around Halloween because my students feel like they're creating part of a costume. Plus, who doesn't love reading Poe in October?
In this project, students actually create their own masquerade mask. I usually read "Masque of the Red Death" to teach my students symbolism, so this assignment goes hand-in-hand.
