This is a must use lab activity for middle school science. Students will examine pennies over the last 60 years to determine mass. From there they will make a determination which year the penny changed composition based on its mass. This lab can be used in a variety of contexts. Teaching kids to measure mass in the metric system or using triple beam balances is a good place to start. Additionally, learning how to collect scientific data and draw conclusions with the scientific method is another good place.
