Students need to understand the influence of the media on society. In order to have them look more closely at the interrelationship between society and the media, this project asks students to identify a particular culture, such as Breast Cancer Awareness, and look at the influence that the culture has had on the media and/or the influence the media has had on the culture. They break down the media into categories and decide which part they are going to study. For example, they might decide to study social media's impact on the Breast Cancer Awareness campaign. Then, they will conduct their own research to come up with their own findings. This is a basic research methods project. I realize this is VERY basic and an entire course could be taught on research methods, this allows for early stages of research for young adults (high school students). They get to be social scientists with their own research questions and theories.
