Description

This poetry mini-unit for grades 6-10 will help students to master standard RL 2: Analyze the development of theme over the course of a text. In this mini-unit, students analyze the theme of "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost, looking at how the theme develops through the four stanzas. Students use the TP-CASTT method of poetry analysis to:
-Predict using the title.
-Paraphrase the poem.
-Analyze connotative language (figurative, imagery, and sounds).
-Analyze the attitude of the poem.
-Determine the theme, analyzing its development over the course of the poem.
-Looking back at the title to determine the significance.

After students read and analyze the poem, they write their own Robert Frost inspired poem, focused on developing a powerful theme.
