What is included in this pack?
Included in this pack are:
• 5 fiction titles with four levels of each title
• 4 nonfiction titles with four levels of each title
• one poem (unleveled)
• Lesson plans for each title
• All materials and activities for the texts
• Word study materials for each FICTION title
• 7 I can cards that match the teaching focus of each lesson
• 7 posters in color or black and white that match the teaching focus of each lesson

How is this pack different than other guided reading packs?

• Instead of several different titles on one level, this pack was written so that teachers could use the SAME title and work on the SAME skill or strategy with students. There are 4 discreetly written levels of each text, so student may not even be aware that the texts are different. The lesson plan is the same for every level to make planning simple for the teacher.

• I wrote the text in pairs, or text sets. For example, after students read a fiction book of the fable Town Mouse and Country Mouse, the teacher can follow up with nonfiction book called Mice and discussing how mice live and behave.

• When I wrote the texts, I tried to be very aware of the burden of copy counts and printer copies. Each text is only one page, front and back. This allows students to actually write in the text, make notes, and do any coding right in the book. When the students are done reading the text, the book can easily be sent home for fluency practice. No more worrying about copy counts and if guided reading books will come back to school! The texts were designed to be consumable!

• It is PROVEN to be effective! I conducted an eight week case study with 17 teachers across the United States. Teachers used the program and collected data from March 2017 to May 2017. The average student gained 89 Lexiles over the eight week study. All scores were correlated to this chart, available free online. According to the chart there are about 4 guided reading levels, or 200 Lexiles in 2nd grade. Want to read the study for yourself? Click here!

• A separate file, or version of this file, is included for easy binding!

How are the texts organized?
For each book title, there are four levels of texts. The text levels are end first grade, beginning second grade, mid second grade, and end second grade. For your convenience, a chart with the approximate DRA and Fountas and Pinnell levels are included. However, please note that these levels are approximated and not endorsed by their respective program.

A code is included in the bottom right of each cover of the text. The code is as follows:
• 1E= end first grade
• 2B= beginning second grade
• 2M= mid second grade
• 2E= end second grade

What do the lessons look like?

• There is one lesson for all four levels of the text.

• All leveled texts are working on the same teaching point.

• There are 3 days of reading plans and one day of writing plans.

• Four days of word study lessons are included for each fiction text. The several words with the word study pattern are found in the texts. The teacher can opt not to use the word study and it will not affect the lesson.

• All materials to teach and extend the text are included.

Exactly what is included in the lessons?
There is one lesson plan for the four leveled texts of the same title. This is so that no matter the reading level, all students can be exposed to the same instructional points. The lesson plans are displayed over two pages to make them easy to read and follow. Four days of lessons are written for each text. This was done purposefully, since it is often hard for teachers to meet with every group, every day.
There are 3 days of explicit reading plans. The fourth day is a guided writing lesson.

This extends the teaching point, guided practice with extended response, or a specific writing genre.

On the left hand side of the lesson plan you will find an overview about the text. This column includes a text summary for the teacher, the main teaching point of the text, the tricky words in the text, materials needed for the week, and approximated text levels.

Each lesson begins with word study. The text contains several words with the word study pattern for the week. Students will use word sorts to explore the word patterns. A larger set of teacher cards and smaller student cards are provided. This portion of the lesson can be skipped or can even be completed whole group. It has been provided as a convenience for the teacher, but is not a mandatory part of the program.

Students will always reread a familiar text to start each lesson. This is a “warm up for the brain,” but also promotes fluency. After rereading, the teacher can activate the text with an optional activity. All the materials for activation are included. Then, the teacher will introduce the text and tricky words. Next, the teacher will ask the students a question about the text. This question sets the purpose for reading. The students will be assigned one page of text to read. The book has been formatted so that one page will be read in each guided reading lesson. A bookmark has been provided for each student. The bookmark has the questions about the text. After students finish reading the text, they can write their response on the bookmark.
After discussing the answers to the question, a script has been provided for the teaching point. This teaching point is the same for each level of text.

The fourth day is a scripted lesson for guided writing. All the materials are provided for the lesson, including any graphic organizers.

A list of extension activities for the word sort and text is also provided. These activities are perfect for students to complete independently the week AFTER reading the text. These would be great for independent center work to extend the text.

Love this Pack? There will be MORE Volumes!
You may notice that this pack labeled as Volume Two. I am currently in the progress of writing this as an entire program. Currently only Volumes One and Two are available. The plan for the program includes SIX volumes and 27 fiction and 27 nonfiction. Each title will have 4 levels. Later in the program, end first grade level will be swapped out for a beginning third grade to allow for student growth.

Anything else to keep in mind?

• The texts do NOT need to be read in a specific order, unless you are including the word study as part of the guided reading lesson. I specially chose the word study to increase in difficulty throughout this program.

• Each lesson is about 20 minutes long.

• The guided writing portion of the lesson is optional. Teachers could also use the graphic organizer for each text from the “Extension Ideas” and have students write from the graphic organizer.

• The graphic organizer from the “Extension Ideas’ can often be applied to ANY text. The teacher could use this for an assessment by providing a grade appropriate text for student to read and write about.

• A Word Study companion pack is also available. This companion pack has 4 word study centers for each word study pattern.
