Efficiency and consistency are crucial to student growth. That is why we created Mastery Processes, a map to empower students, giving them the tools they need to navigate the sometimes subjective waters of English Literature studies. We created processes so that the students could see, from start to finish, what he/she needs to do to fully satisfy the demands of the standard. The processes are formatted in easy to follow graphics making them approachable to students of all levels.
Mastery Processes have a center place in my classroom throughout the year. In the beginning of the year, the files are copied and distributed to the students to place in their notebooks. As new standards are introduced and practiced, the Mastery Processes are the guide we refer to. They help the students navigate step by step through the standards creating habits that help them progress as we march toward the End of Course State Test.
When the State Test draws near, we use the Mastery Processes as review material, allowing students to independently focus on the areas that need their attention. Using the Mastery Processes, students are able to accurately pinpoint the step where confusion sets in or identify spots where additional practice would be helpful. With these processes in place, many of the desired critical thinking skills become habits that will serve the students in all subject matters.
Another way that Mastery Processes are helpful, is that they apply to all literature. We use Mastery Processes as we design lessons, in-class remediation, and tutoring. This creates consistency and reinforce the processes the students are practicing. We have included a model of RL.1 that accompanies Arthur Doyle’s, “The Final Problem” based on the Mastery Process for that standard.
