“Mata and the Stolen lunches” is a title in the Super Sandwich series (the Mata books) for Grades 2-4 reluctant and slow-to-start readers, especially boys. In this story, Mata is accused of stealing lunches until a rat is discovered – which Mata secretly rescues.
There are twelve “Mata” titles in the series, and two bonus “Shayla” titles, making up fourteen, 16-page photo-illustrated adventure stories in which Mata and Shayla get into and out of trouble, face danger, act heroically – and generally save the day and get adult approval.
As well as having characters and storylines that appeal to young readers and non-readers alike, the books use easy-reading strategies including very short sentences, small blocks of text broken up with exciting photo-illustrations that mirror the text, simple vocabulary, speech bubbles, a map showing where events take place, and carefully chosen typography and line-breaks.
There is also a teacher’s book (That’s the Idea!) for the series, with strategies for teaching reluctant-reader boys and over a hundred shared, guided, and independent reading activities for introducing the stories, developing reading skills and consolidating the reading.
Super Sandwich titles may be bought separately, or the whole series can be bought together at half the price of buying the individual items. Mata and the Cliff Cave is a free title from the series to try with your students.
