Add an extra "thinking" component when grouping students!
The purpose of this activity is to have the students use their knowledge of units to match up with other students in groups of two or more. This can be used to group students or as a quick formative assessment during the lesson (or both).
There are a few of options for this activity. You can…
Divide the class in half: Tape the “base unit” and “derived unit” cards on opposite sides of the class. Hand out the cards to the students. The students will go to the sign that corresponds to their card.
Pair the students: Hand out measurement and base unit cards. The students will pair up based on their cards (ex. “length” pairs with “meter”).
Group the students in three: Hand out measurement, basic unit, and abbreviation/symbol cards. The students will group up based on their cards (ex. “length” and “meter” and “m”)
