### PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Matching Arrays with Multiplication Facts
Why Should Students Work With Arrays?
• As students begin to work with the concept of multiplication, they need to make the transition from repeated addition to multiplication. The structure of the visual representation of arrays helps students to see this. An array shows a certain number of objects in each row for a certain number of rows-repeatedly adding the number in each row each time.
• Arrays are arranged in horizontal rows and vertical columns.
• An array helps the student to focus on equal distribution of the total number of objects into groups—the same number of objects in each group or row
• Students also begin working with multiples….that are really the sums that result from the repeated addition of each row or column – or the product of two factors multiplied together.
• Working with arrays can also let students explore the relationship between multiplication and division. An array of 5 objects in each of 3 rows can show 5X3=15, or 3X5=15, or 15 divided into 3 rows results in 5 objects in each row, or 15 objects divided into five objects in each group results in 3 groups (represented by rows in the array).
• The structure of the array also leads the student toward the understanding of the concept of area – the space found inside a 2 dimensional shape. With these examples you can see that an array with 5 objects in each of 3 rows can transition into representing that array as a rectangle with a length of 5 units and a width of 3 units.

This resource asks students to match arrays with the multiplication facts that they represent. Two worksheets are included. I sometimes use this activity as a center area and other times, I may use it as part of small group instruction especially with those students in need of intervention at tier 1, tier 2, or tier 3. Answer keys are included for the matching activity and the worksheets.
