Product Description
Help your students see structure in expressions, understand the concept of equivalent equations and improve their equation solving skills – all with one simple activity. The materials for the activity are simple: 25 cards with equations written on them. The cards can be arranged into five sets of five equivalent equations. An included answer key shows how to properly group the cards.
Since the cards are ordered with each card’s variable expression nested inside the variable expression of the next (e.g. “2x = 4” on one card and “2x + 3 = 7” on the next), the cards can be used in a variety of ways.
1. Give each student in a group the most complex equation and have them find the intermediary equations and solution.
2. Give each student in a group the simplest equation (e.g. “x = 2”) and have them find the remaining equivalent equations by looking for nested expressions.
3. Give a group of students all 25 cards and have them sort them out!
Print the sheets up (without the answer key, of course) and have students cut them out themselves, or laminate the cards to use over and over again!
Even if your students master all seven sets (other six sets sold separately), you can mix and match for added challenges!
