Langston Hughes' short story "Cora, Unashamed" is a GREAT text for middle school and high school students because it involves controversial issues, a forbidden romance, and the untimely death of one of the characters. Brief summary if you haven't read it: a white teenager gets pregnant by her immigrant boyfriend; her mother forces her to have an abortion, which causes her death. The story revolves around the relationship between the girl and her African-American caregiver. Race, immigration, teen pregnancy, parents imposing decisions on their children -- all of these "hot button" issues are in this story.
Also, there is a film version that varies from the text -- great for contrast and discussing with students why the writer + director made the choices they did while telling this story.
Worksheets and reading guides were designed for high school students in advanced + intermediate ESL, but can be scaled up for students who need more of a challenge.
