Math-1st Grade-Month 04: Challenge Problem Solving (Questions 61-80)

ENGAGE YOUR STUDENTS WITH MATH PROBLEMS THE WHOLE YEAR!

In this series, there are 10 units. Each unit is a set of 20 constructed-response problems. Students’ skills and conceptual understanding progress through the units. Each unit is a building block for the next. A student should show understanding of each problem before progressing to the next unit.

♥ Math Challenge Problem Solving - 1st Grade ♥
Full Unit Unit 1 Unit 2 Unit 3 Unit 4 Unit 5
Unit 6 Unit 7 Unit 8 Unit 9 Unit 10

The question numbers are consecutive from the first unit to the last (questions 1 to 200). This allows teachers to locate answers quickly and assess students understanding. Each unit has an answer key in the back of the unit.

Each teacher has his/her own way of using these units. Find what method works best for your teaching style.

A GREAT WAY TO RAISE THEIR BENCHMARK SCORES, BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY... THEY LEARN TO LOVE MATH!

► Overview ◄

Students who have a variety of skill levels can successfully work through these word problems. This unit is engaging for reluctant learners, typical learners, and advanced learners. In addition, there are versions of this unit for other grade levels. This allows you the option of having different levels of the unit for different levels of learners.

As a teacher and instructional coach, I use the Challenge Problem Series in all elementary grade levels with students who have a variety of skill levels. This curriculum moves beyond memorizing procedures or merely working with numbers. Because of this transition, your students may initially experience productive struggle. They must learn to justify their thinking and show they conceptually understand what they are doing.

Teachers in my building are also independently using this curriculum. Some teachers initially had reservations because they were concerned that the problems may be too difficult for some students. It normally took the teachers a couple of weeks to get their students through the initial adjustment period. After the adjustment period, students get excited about their success in learning new math skills and concepts.

Teachers are demonstrating growth scores with all students including their reluctant learners, typical learners, and advanced/gifted learners. Our elementary school was highest in our district and our district was the highest in the state for achievement and growth in math.
