You know your students' strengths and weaknesses. Give your students the preview and spiral review they need and deserve. This template can be used to create weekly Math 5 A Day assignments for each of your math classes or to accomplish the same outcome in other subject areas.
When creating M5AD's, I use problems to cover standards that I have already taught to keep my students spiraling throughout the year; however, I also create problems to pre-assess my students' knowledge of standards that we have not yet covered. A preview/review Math 5 A Day ensures students are retaining the skills and knowledge necessary to be successful and also gives you the information needed prior to teaching new concepts.
This type of assignment can be modified for each subject area and utilized as a great bell ringer, or what I call a BRAIN- Being Ready And Involved Now.
I created this same type of assignment for Social Studies and called it the SS5. It served as a great spiral review for the many recall types of answers to standards that students need to learn.
When teaching 3rd grade science, I would handwrite questions that required a short answer. For instance: Q: What part of the plant makes the seeds? This assignment was perfect for recalling information. After students could recall the information needed, I could then have students use his or her knowledge to answer higher level questions on different assignments.
