Students are required to provide constructed responses (CRA) which help in the preparation for PARCC.
This is month 9 of a 10-month grade level series. Each month contains 20 rigorous conceptually based problems that take students beyond naked numbers. Each month's problems increase in complexity from the month before, as well as spiraling. Each month provides additional concepts and conceptual reasoning through child friendly real-world problems.
Math tasks can be completed daily or copied and put in individual folders for students.
I do this twice weekly with my students for a challenge. I circulate around the room asking assessing and advancing questions while the students work.
As students complete a mini task, they raise their hands and I assess quickly, put a check plus if correct or ask an advancing question if not. If the student is correct, he or she moves to the next problem, if not, he or she continues to work until successful.
Each child feels challenged! Promotes higher level thinking.
