This resource is a Performance Based Assessment. This project supplements my Unit 5 on Ratios and Proportions and allows students to demonstrate their knowledge of calculating tax and discounts. I hope this project works well for you and your students and saves you valuable personal time. This lesson supports VA SOL 7.3. If you liked this lesson, please look for all the other lessons and activities for this Unit in my TPT store. I also have many other lessons and unit bundles for Math 7 in my TpT store. This lesson is intended for single use in your classroom. Please direct your colleagues to my store if they would like to use my products.

Materials needed:

1) A variety of sales ads, catalogs and newspaper flyers. (Example: Bass Pro, LL Bean, Aldi, Walmart, etc….) About two weeks before this project, I send an email to all staff at my school and to my student’s parents that we need shopping catalogs and they always send in more than enough.

2) Copy the “Title Page” and the Rubric front to back for each student. Copy the “Worksheet” for each student leaving the back blank so they can glue their chosen items to the back.

3) Copy enough of the Budget Ranges and cut out, so that each student will be to draw one from a container (Christmas Bag). Copy enough of the discount page and cut out so that each student will be able to draw one from a separate container. And finally, copy and cut out enough of the “Friend/Family Members” pages so that each students will draw a different person from a third container.

4) Follow the “Rules” on the student copy of the “title page”.

Log in to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Use proportional relationships to solve multistep ratio and percent problems. Examples: simple interest, tax, markups and markdowns, gratuities and commissions, fees, percent increase and decrease, percent error.
