Product Description

1st Activity - Notes, Guided Examples and Independent Practice

Students must understand that the solution of an equation is the value that makes both sides of the equation the same. The solution will make the statement a true equation. The equations students solved in previous grades did not have the variable on both sides of the equation

A linear equation may have one solution, infinitely many solutions or no solution. Each of these three situations is explored.

Students will stay engaged as they fill in the missing parts of the example problems.

2nd Activity – Word Problems

This activity contains word problems which require writing an equation and/or solving the equation and interpreting the answer. Two of the problems are to be graphed. Questions 7 and 8 have lots of room for class discussion.

Common Core State Standard:

Expressions and Equations 8.EE

7. Solve linear equations in one variable.

a. Give examples of linear equations in one variable with one solution, infinitely many solutions, or no solutions. Show which of these possibilities is the case by successively transforming the given equation into simpler forms, until an equivalent equation of the form x = a, a = a, or a = b results (where a and b are different numbers).

b. Solve linear equations with rational number coefficients, including equations whose solutions require expanding expressions using the distributive property and collecting like terms.
