Color-coded, step-by-step, Addition and Subtraction anchor charts created for primary, and even intermediate grades using the standard algorithms. For some students addition and subtraction presents no issues. But for some, having a step-by-step process (algorithm) to refer back to sometimes can prove invaluable. It is important that students understand that place value is extremely important, and that attending to precision (in the way that they write their problems) is equally critical. When we get to regrouping, suddenly students hit a wall. To get around this I have taught my students a simple strategy; "Take one from the left. Add ten to the right." At first, they don't know why they need to do this but once they realize it works they run with it, Only later do they grasp the concept that 1 from the left column is actually 10 times larger than the right. Place value! I also have a slide in the resource dealing with subtracting across zeroes. If they do not understand place value, then they have difficulty working these problems.
