I printed the animals out in all different sizes. Then I created a net on my bulletin board using yarn. I scattered the animals all over the net. I posted different questions that students could respond to, such as "How many crabs are there?" or "Which animal appears the most?"
Students used post it notes to answer. They could be prompted to write numbers or use tally marks.
Using the data, students can turn it into different graphs. Students might even be interested in drawing their own animals and adding them to the net or create their own questions.
