This Math Assessment focuses on CCSS Standards 3.OA.5 and 3.OA.7. This assessment covers using parentheses in equations preparing them for “Order of Operations” strategies they will learn later on.
In order to promote higher order thinking and productivity, I don’t usually use multiple choice questions. I like to use Standardized test-type items to better prepare my students throughout the year, in order to prep them for the year-end standardized tests. This mode of thinking also allows me to learn more about creating high quality, student engaged assignments and assessments. Most of the test items I select have multiple parts, in order for my students to do their best work, and even if they don’t get the “ANSWER” correct they may still earn a point or two if their work reflects the thinking strategies that they use.
I did not include point values on the test items or a Grading Scale, because school districts vary on grading policies, and teachers have different views on point values as they pertain to the complexity of the test items involved.
Also keep in mind that there are numerous high quality strategies used in math today. While my answer keys reflect the dominant strategies we use in our district, you may use completely different strategies.
